2012 – think like a martial artist

By Jena Griffiths | January 2, 2012

Mayan calendar maker to a friend: “I ran out of stone when I got to 2012!”
The friend: “Boy, that’s really gonna freak someone out one day.”

how to prepare for 2012

How to prepare for 2012?
Apply martial arts thinking:
Instead of making more resolutions – do the opposite.

Clear your mind of everything so that you can be
“in the zone” – creative and spontaneous
and totally prepared.

How?

Here’s some advice from a world authority
on time management, David Allen:
Get all commitments and other psychic “clutter”
out of your head and onto paper.

– the door knob that needs fixing,
– the friend who needs to be phoned,
– the blog post that needs writing…
🙂

(It’s amazing how much we keep in our heads
so this process could take you a few hours.)

Then look at each item and ask yourself,
“Do I need to take action or not?”

If yes, ask yourself two more questions:
“What outcome do I want?”
“What’s the next action I need to take?”

For example, it might just be unscrewing the
old door knob so that you can take it with you
to the hardware store.

Allen also says instead of one “to do” list
have several:

– the urgent list
– the someday-maybe list
– the online list
– the “can be done anywhere” list

Interestingly, it’s not doing the next action step
that counts, but the process of putting all the
commitments currently occupying your mind
onto paper instead, thereby freeing your mind
to be fully present. Alert. Tuned in.

May you be “in the zone” in the coming year.
Thanks for being here.
Happy New Year.

Tuesdays with Richard starts January 24th
I’m leaving the early bird special up another week
in case you’re still on holiday.
The first call is about starting a successful business.
The advanced hand shapes course starts mid February.

How can knowing your type or your partner’s type help improve communication?

By Jena Griffiths | December 18, 2011

‘One man’s meat is another man’s poison’ Idiom

Are you giving other people what you need rather than what they need or want?
Knowing and understanding your and other people’s body type, personality type or learning type helps improve communication.

For example, there are three Ayurvedic body types: vata, pitta, kapha
Vata types need sound and touch (spoken words)
Pitta types respond better to visual cues such as written words or colours
Kapha types respond emotionally to smell or taste so buying them perfume or taking them out to a restaurant may be a better way of communicating your feelings to them, rather than writing a poem! (Deepak Chopra)
Also, when these types are off balance it manifests in a particular way. Knowing and being able to recognise imbalace makes you more compassionate towards their behaviour.

Are you an auditory, visual or feeling- kinesthetic type?

In NLP there’s a simple technique to assess more or less the same thing:
whether you’re auditory, visual or tactile type.
depending on whether your eyes go up, sideways, or down while you’re describing a past event.

You can do this test on yourself but probably you’re an auditory type because you listen to or learn through telecalls. How about your partner and kids? Perhaps they’re a different type with different needs. Are you giving them what you need (talking) rather than what they need (dinner)? 😉

The same applies to hand shape types or heart line types.
Understanding and respecting other people’s communication needs helps you be more effective and get better results

For effective communication, you need to talk differently to an Earth type with a long index finger (Master of my domain) than to an air type with a long pinkie (Sherlock type) or to a water type with a long ring finger.
We’ll be learning what these different types are, what their needs are and how to recognize when they’re off balance and what to do during our forthcoming advanced hand shape course with Richard Unger starting this February. More info.

Replay of free interviews with Richard Unger

By Jena Griffiths | December 12, 2011

updated 2024

In 2008 (2 years prior to creating Earth School) I set out to interview all leading hand readers at that time across numerous systems of thought with the view to finding common ground. After interviewing Richard Unger and Birla, all the other thought leaders from totally different systems whom I wished to interview turned down my offer so I interviewed a few of Richard’s former students. This made me aware of the fact that a lot of former students weren’t aware of Richard’s more recent work.
I subsequently changed my project and, instead of focusing on numerous schools of thought, decided to focus primarily on Richard Unger’s work, particularly his more recent thinking. This turned into a 6 year project (2010-2016) where I interviewed Richard weekly for students around the world in Earth School. The objective was to record his thinking for future generations and to create a searchable library for professional hand analysts so that they could understand the original thinking. You can access a number of calls from the Richard Unger Library here.
Many of the recordings with Richard are freely available below.
The rest have been archived.

Over the years Richard has identified over 65 personality characteristics that can be identified through hand shape. Some of these indicators come from previous generations and were verified by Richard Unger. The rest were identified by Richard over the years. Many hand analysts from around the world are now using Richard’s advanced hand shapes model with great success.

sixteen archetypes to be covered in Earth School over the next
two years, including career archetypes that will dramatically shorten
the learning curve for both new and seasoned hand analysts.

Richard says, “One of the two biggest upgrades to my reading

Are you playing enough at work?

By Jena Griffiths | December 7, 2011

“The opposite of play isn’t work, it’s depression.”

google headquarters zurich

I was at Google head office in Zurich yesterday to meet the Startup Bus team. A group of creative young entrepreneurs touring Europe at the moment. Well done to Zurich based event organiser David Butler.

While there I had a chance to peek behind scenes at the Google office space.

I really take my hat off to Google for understanding basic needs of their employees to play more, take cat naps and care for body, mind and spirit. What a cool place. They really set a standard that other companies would do well to follow.

google fun inspiring and caring for employees
There’s a wonderful ambiance: lots of play areas, snack bars, meeting nooks and crannies, a finess and massage center and there’s even darkened room lit up only with fish tanks where you can sleep or meditate when you need time out.

I love the firemen chutes from one floor to the next. Why take the lift when you can have an adrenaline rush?

It’s all a game anyway – most of us tend to forget this. Why not lighten up. Enjoy the ride.

Surviving Christmas alone

By Jena Griffiths | December 7, 2011

Last night I interviewed Lori Latimer on how to survive the festive season alone or when your children are with your ex. How to juggle family commitments so that everyone wins and also, so you’re aren’t left feeling sorry for yourself.
Lori made some good suggestions such as offer your services at a local shelter or other institution, or invite other single friends to join you or treat yourself to a wellness.

We also discussed the importance of focusing on all the things you have rather than what you don’t have, such as the happiness and health of your children. As one door closes others open. There is always a seed of an opportunity in every crisis but you need to be open and not focused on your own misery to see them.
We discussed the need to get out there and meet new people.
Every city has clubs of like-minded people, women’s groups or business groups or philosophy clubs. For example, in Zürich there’s ZIWA (the Zürich International Women’s Association), the American Women’s Club, the Asian Ladies Club of Switzerland, Professional Women’s Group of Zurich, Toastmasters and many more. You simply have to take the first step: get out there until you find a group that you resonate with; your adopted tribe or family. Here are the links to a many different groups for women complied by Xpat Xchange. There’ll be similar groups wherever you are in the world.

Also it helps to look at your ex or original family from a higher perspective (eg through the lens of your fingerprints). This helps you to re-frame the past and look for how this is serving you in some way. In other words, adopt the perspective that this is a supportive universe. One way or another, your ex or original family are your noble friends. How so? This perspective allows you to be far gentler on both yourself and others. I find knowing what your fingerprints say really helps. (You can figure this out yourself inside Earth School.)

Like all calls in Earth School, you can listen to the replay of the call with Lori any time you need to in the free auditorium.
