Healer burnout: are you suffering from “compassion fatigue”?

By Jena Griffiths | November 29, 2010

“Healing is more about being, and less about doing”. Prit Gill MD

I’m just off the call with Dr Prit Gill MD on the topic healer burnout.
He made some profound points on the nature of healing and the role of the healer in society.

Dr Gill gave useful advice to help healers from all traditions avoid the natural danger of healer burnout.

Gill said all healers experience burnout at some point in their career
We discussed high risk personality traits for burnout such as

As well as behavioural risk factors such as:

Cures discussed included

We also discussed compassion, deeksha, spiral meditation and how healing occurs.
Dr Gill said that healing is more about being and less about doing. The healer enables the patient to heal themselves by by “holding the fears of the patient at bay.”

We discussed the appropriateness of letting go versus holding clients.
Sometimes by scheduling the next appointment the client feels held. It’s a simple way of creating a “space” for healing to take place.

Healer Burnout: are you in danger?

By Jena Griffiths | November 27, 2010

Our next interview will be with Dr Prit Gill on Healer Burnout: healing and caring for yourself.

Jena GriffithsIMG_8655 reduced

Date: 29 november 2010
Topic: Healer Burnout

On Monday 29 November I’ll be interviewing Dr Gill on healer burnout. Dr Gill has worked as a healer for 33 years. He is assistant Clinical Professor in Medicine, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and identifies himself as being a holistic physician who happens to be anchored by allopathic scientifically derived medicine. Dr Gill’s life journey has afforded him a rather diverse and different vantage point from which to view his chosen profession.

During the call Dr Gill will be sharing his vast experience with you.

You’ll learn about:

Please forward this link to anyone you know of who may benefit.

Who is Dr Prit Gill?

Dr Gill was born and raised in rural black tribal Africa and had his early formal education grounded in Africa. Hence he absorbed the tenets of practice as well as the role and influence of the traditional African Medicine man and his art very early in his career. Time invested at a Catholic monastically driven seminary allowed him an education into the medieval healing rituals of early western tradition. Because of circumstances related to his family’s spiritual roots he is deeply steeped and influenced by the heritage of Eastern thought and faiths (Buddhist/Hindu/Sikh) as they pertain to the healing of human physical and psychic pain.

In addition having for many years worked intimately with relatively isolated Native American populations on Indian Reservations in Oklahoma and North Dakota, Dr Gill has also assimilated into his perceptual universe the ancient healing wisdom of Native Americans.

Cures for depression: Jump

By Jena Griffiths | November 15, 2010

Exercise is one of the bests ways to counter depression.
Yesterday we were climbing alps in the glorious sunshine but today we’re in the freezing fog.

kangoo jumps a good cure for depression

Jena jumping for joy

When it’s too cold to go outdoors and you don’t have time to go to your local gym it’s easy to put off exercising and suddenly a week’s gone by with you at your desk…..

As my mother used to say: the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
🙂

What I do in times like this is put on my Jumps and run or dance on the spot in my living room.
(I also go running in them outdoors when the weather isn’t too bad).
They’re a great way to elevate your mood. And you often meet new people because they’re so unusual.

I discovered Jumps through a fitness training friend in Johannesburg but actually they’re a Swiss invention!

If you’d like a pair here’s where you can get more info

Cures for depression: best books

By Jena Griffiths | November 11, 2010

The best book I’ve come across on healing depression is by Daniel Amen and Lisa Routh.

Dr Amen uses state of the art brain scanning to identify which of 7 different types of anxiety and depression you might be. Each type requires a different treatment. There ‘s a self diagnosis questionnaire so you can do this without the expense of a brain scan.

Some types of depression are treatable with belly breathing, gratitude, Vitamin D (sunshine), fish oil and exercise. Being outdoors in nature. Also experiment with how you hold your body. For example, opening up your chest and stretching out your arms in a winning position. Sounds simple and it is!
Other forms may require more specialist treatment. See the interviews with Judith Kravitz (breath work) and Itzhak Beery (shamanistc perspective).

If you’re struggling with depression I recommend this book :
Healing Anxiety and Depression

For severe depression/ on bipolar disorder – you might also want to check out Kay Redfield Jamieson’s book The Unquiet Mind An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness

and her other books. More about Kay Redfield Jamieson

Cures for depression: gratitude

By Jena Griffiths | November 11, 2010

One of the most powerful cures for depression is gratitude. This sounds crazy but it really works.

I recently discoverd this beautiful gratitude journal created by jack Canfield and DD Watkins.
It’s a hard cover and has such an abundant feel, color and texture it’s a joy to have and hold.
And the price is really generous.

I love it so much I’ve ordered several more copies so I can give them to friends as Christmas gifts.

Cures for depression: Ilahinoor

By Jena Griffiths | November 8, 2010

I recently interviewed Kiara Windrider on a new way of accessing healing energy through Ilahinoor, which uses an additional chakra point at the back of one’s head.

ilahinoor healing energy founder

Kiara Windrider

Kiara was previously a psychotherapist but now travels the world training people in this new system. He is author of Journey into Forever and has some fascinating views on Earth changes, magnetic fields and how he sees radical changes in these fields impacting on us and our energetic systems.

We talked about existential depression, Mayan calanders and the so called “end of the world” which he sees simply as a scheduled magnetic readjustment.

Kiara’s new way of accessing healing energy creates a bridge that bypasses the thinking mind, grounding this energy deeper into one’s physical body.

You can access the replay of this interview in the free auditorium of Earth School.
