Cures for depression: best books

By Jena Griffiths | November 11, 2010

The best book I’ve come across on healing depression is by Daniel Amen and Lisa Routh.

Dr Amen uses state of the art brain scanning to identify which of 7 different types of anxiety and depression you might be. Each type requires a different treatment. There ‘s a self diagnosis questionnaire so you can do this without the expense of a brain scan.

Some types of depression are treatable with belly breathing, gratitude, Vitamin D (sunshine), fish oil and exercise. Being outdoors in nature. Also experiment with how you hold your body. For example, opening up your chest and stretching out your arms in a winning position. Sounds simple and it is!
Other forms may require more specialist treatment. See the interviews with Judith Kravitz (breath work) and Itzhak Beery (shamanistc perspective).

If you’re struggling with depression I recommend this book :
Healing Anxiety and Depression

For severe depression/ on bipolar disorder – you might also want to check out Kay Redfield Jamieson’s book The Unquiet Mind An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness

and her other books. More about Kay Redfield Jamieson
